What You Need to Know About Deck Care

Beautiful wooden structures have a long history in the United States and a warm place in the hearts of many Americans. Today, with synthetic materials playing a greater part in modern home construction, our love of wood as a building material is mostly kept alive in our interior trim, cabinets, hardwood flooring, and beautiful wooden decks.

A new redwood or cedar deck can truly be a thing to behold. It can beautify your home, increase your recreational space, and help bring the indoors outside. All exterior wood surfaces require maintenance, and protection. Wood decks are no exception. In fact, wood decks are more susceptible to damage from the forces of nature than painted exterior wood surfaces. For this reason, timely and comprehensive deck care can make a difference in how long your deck lasts and how much of the `original beauty and freshness it retains.

Restoring a Wood Deck Involves Three Steps

    1. Cleaning: Surfaces must be cleaned of anything that detracts from the wood's natural beauty and anything that may impede the refinishing process. This includes:

      • The aged top layer of the wood. Removing the top layer of the wood will also remove any graying of the wood caused by ultra violet radiation.
      • Any embedded dirt or debris.
      • Any residual finish or sealers that may impede the wood's ability to absorb new protective coatings.
For cleaning, we use modern industrial wood cleaners designed specifically to clean wood decking gently without damaging it.

    2. Restoration: This involves returning your deck to its natural color. For this we use penetrating, pigmented, oil-based products. Pigmented, oil-based products also have the added ability to preserve your deck and to protect it from the effects of the sun's ultraviolet rays.
    3. Waterproofing and Sealing: Continuous cycles of wet and dry cause wood to swell and shrink repeatedly. This leads to cracking, warping, splitting, and checking. A timely coat of waterproofing sealer can retard this process indefinitely. Again, for this we use the top-rated industrial products.
